That future is here.
You should have a look at the occassional samples of Apache
and BIND DNS versions done by Netcraft and Bill Manning of
ISI respectively.
It wasn't that long ago that egrariously unpatched versions
of Linux and Solaris were used to mount the distributed
denial of service attacks.
Even now we have a big hole in the majordomo e-mail list
manager, I'd doubt that few of them are patched yet.
