Hello all,
Also from http://www.PoliticsOnline.com
BBC) A heated debate is currently taking place in Britain. A very
controversial piece of legislation for monitoring the Internet, the
Regulation of Investigatory Powers (RIP) Bill, has been sent to the
House of Lords for discussion. If the bill was to be enacted, a report
by the British Chambers of Commerce finds that it could cost the economy
severely. The survey finds that Internet companies would choose to do
business where they are free from this legislation. (June 13, 2000)
(FT.com) Responding to the argument is Jack Straw, the Home Secretary;
he believes that the reports of economic damage have been widely
exaggerated. Straw believes that this bill would be a highly effective
tool used for fighting organized crime. Also arguing that similar bills
have been successful in the Netherlands. (June 14, 2000)
