Dear Linkers,
Just got a call from Telstra saying that my trial application for ADSL in
Kent St can't proceed (was supposed to be installed today) as the number I
nominated (02 9262XXXX) in on City South Exchange and I can't have the trial
there. In fact, City South isn't listed for the end of August 2000 roll out
either. (See http://www.telstra.com.au/adsl/nsw.cfm )
This suggests that some significant part of the Sydney CBD will be without
ADSL service. At least at launch time. The listing shows only Kent and Pitt
exchanges. No City South, No Haymarket. Even the Telstra ADSL team at the
Darling Park Building have no service (although they are attempting some
kluge to wire that building's access from City South - or perhaps from
Kent - which is probably geographically closer - maybe not by cable route).
I also assume that Telstra's Sydney HQs in Castlereagh and Elizabeth Streets
will be without service...they are next door to and across the road from
City South Exchange).
The thing that burns is that their listing for Kent Street exchange prefixes
lists the 9262 range. Apparently this is really City South. The Web site
listing is wrong, they say, and they'll contact the powers that be and have
it corrected.
So, is ~50% of the Sydney CBD going without?
Another manifestation of the North/South Divide?
Unhappily yours,
