Here's the rub...
The problem with applications like Netscape and it's competition is
the same problem pervading all software genre at this time.
The problem is not that the program is bloated but that it's bloated
because the designers are all trying to out-compete each other
through feature-itis. Netscape/Mozilla was a "killer app" but this
has actually killed the app itself. As one Open Source fiend put it,
"every application evolves until it can send email". I think it was one
of the designers of "the GIMP" that said it. Why a program that
is used for designing graphics absolutely positively needs to send
email is beyond me but there you go....
As you can see, this attempt to bundle every application known to
humanity into a single mega app is weakening the premise of what the app
was originally designed to do. We have seen the web browser evolve
from a simple program that delivered text to our screens in an
almost orderly fashion into a morass of extras and plugins and the ability
to access resources via the other Internet protocols. Somewhere along the way
all the good work was diluted.
The thing is, though, the average user just doesn't
want to waste time going to the web and downloading discrete clients
for every Internet protocol they want to access. The good old instant
gratification takes hold. These things are market driven and the
market seems to like an application that does 7 things, all poorly.
Thankfully Netscape provide different releases without the extra
bloatitis that seems to pervade all the other clients. I guess
I will never change from using discrete clients for the various
protocols on the net - it just seem natural.....
