I un-installed Netscape 4.73 and re-installed 4.61 - no difference,
although I was able to compact my folders, something I couldn't do in 4.73
The problem turned out to be Norton Anti Virus (NAV). When I unloaded NAV
it worked great. The most obvious difference was the speed with which I
could select a message from a folder and get it displayed. With NAV running
- several seconds. No NAV - instantaneous.
I thought I had turned NAV off completely, but it was back working again.
IBM is serious about viruses and has set up our systems to do automatic
downloads of profiles, system audits (which it sends back to some server on
the intranet) and such like.
Anyway it seems to have been a co-incidence that I upgraded to NS 4.73 just
as NAV got turned back on. I have now configured NAV to be not quite so
comprehensive in it's monitoring and the performance is back to normal.
It did get me thinking about the proportion of the world's CPU cycles are
wasted on antivirus checking. It's going to get worse as censorship
products chew up even more. I wonder if Intel et al have shares in such
enterprises?
Thanks to all those who sent suggestions.
