Yesterday I had a message from someone in the USA asking for help in
finding a photograph of their Uncle's grave. They found me via the web and
I was able to find information about the graveyard for them the same way,
including a copy of the photo which started the whole thing off.
Their Uncle had been listed as MIA with the US military in 1943. The day
before yesterday they received a letter saying a person with the same name
as their Uncle was buried in the "Cambridge Cemetery in England".
I had taken a photo of the cemetery
<http://www.acs.org.au/president/1996/epubs/uk.htm> and so they asked me
for help. Wen I took the photo I knew little of its significance, it was
just a stop on the route of a tourist bus.
Pasting the caption from the photo ("American War Cemetery, Madingley") to
a Google web search produced a remarkable amount of useful information:
http://www.google.com/search?q=American+War+Cemetery%2C+Madingley+&btnG=Google+Search
This included more photographs, history and organizations for relatives to
contact about the graves. I sent these links to my enquirer (after a web
search for their name to see they existed).
But one link which startled me
was: http://www.gwydir.demon.co.uk/cambridgeuk/madcem.htm
This has a copy of my photo (with an acknowledgment and link back to my web
site). The search had come back to the starting point.
