FRENCH UPHOLD RULING AGAINST YAHOO! ON NAZI SITES
A French court ruled that Yahoo! must take action to keep
French Internet users from accessing auction Web sites that
feature the sale of Nazi paraphernalia. The decision upholds a
previous ruling handed down by a French judge in May. Yahoo! has
three months to comply with the court's ruling, and if it refuses
to do so it will be fined heavily on a daily basis. Yahoo! had
argued that the ruling was impossible to comply with, but the
court recently heard testimony from Internet experts who
said it is technologically feasible for Yahoo! to distinguish
between French Internet users and users from other countries.
However, one of the experts, Internet guru Vinton G. Cerf,
cautioned against the unnecessary regulation of the Internet.
Yahoo! attorneys say they will weigh the possibility
of an appeal. (New York Times, 21 November 2000)
