4. News on Web Forgeries -- Network Nuggets
The subject: two examples of failure to check the validity of
what you read on the Web.
This news-essay from ZDNet News (affiliated with the journal
"PC Magazine") relates two recent Web forgeries: a false
company news release, and a pastry recipe -- from magicians Penn
and Teller -- that covers your kitchen counter with goo. It's
a 1000-word essay with a Grade 11 reading level. The URL is
http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/comment/0,5859,2635895,00.html
Its point is that both Internet messages appear believable.
In fact, the company news release was widely reported by
Dow Jones News Service and Bloomberg and others; *none* of
their reporters checked to see if the story was true.
This essay may be useful to you for teaching your students
the absolute necessity of checking Web sources.
