Which is still what my e-mail footer still says :-)
Also, the funding for the Southern Cross capacity came
from accumulated funds contributed by members, not
from the Advanced Networks Programme as claimed in the
press release. I'm not particularly fussed about that,
but some members are a tad miffed.
I assume the confusion arose because AARNet has a lot
of capacity projects on the boil at present. AARNet was
part of the GrangeNet consortia which received ANP funding
for the purchase of gigabit capacity up the east coast. We
are also involved in metropolitan fibre projects in most
capital cities and in some regional areas. We are
also doing our best to reduce capacity leasing costs
where the purchase or installation of fibre is currently
It's a bit of an ask for someone who's expertise is in
writing and not in technology to unwind that lot and
attribute who did what correctly.
On the positive side, it's nice to get some recognition
from the minister's office. We have spent a lot of time
educating the departmental staff about the Internet in
general and research networks in particular. Considering
they didn't quite get our name right, we've obviously not
professional lobbyists. With our focus on technology and
engineering we are probably anti-lobbyists, in the sense
that we don't sell snake oil but simply get the job done.
