This is very true. As a case study, in my teens I had a rather nice
collection of illegally copied Apple ][ games. I guess there were
about 20 games in all valued at maybe $1,000. Now I have a collection
of over 100 games that I have legitimately purchased that I guess I've
spent over $8,000 on over the years.

Chances are that if I hadn't copied those games for the Apple ][ I'd
never have become addicted to computer games and the industry would
have lost $8,000 in sales (and counting).
