Having settled that .. one can't let this Link subject line
'Promoting Education in Australia' pass by without some sort
of contribution .. however off-topic to the original post :)
So, here's news of a very good promotion of ICT education
for students already in Australia. And imho there should be
more such initiatives, with Year 11 being just the right age.

Student Information and Communications Technology Excellence
Fellowships
A new initiative of the Victorian Government.
Student ICT Excellence Fellowships are being offered this year
to students producing outstanding work making use of ICT at Year 11
level in Government schools.
Fifty students will receive a Student ICT Excellence Fellowship
of $1,000, funded by the Department of State and Regional Development,
and a three week industry placement in 2001.
Successful students will be acknowledged at an official awards
ceremony.
The ICT Excellence Fellowship is an initiative proposed by the
Victorian Government ICT Skills Taskforce. The Taskforce, announced
by the Minister for State and Regional Development in April 2000 was
created to develop practical initiatives supported by industry and
government to build the state's ICT skills base'.
