Under US copyright law, it most certainly does not. The DMCA has the
effect of also enabling copyright holders to prevent one from
exercising one's right to Fair Use, which is enshrined in copyright
statutes. Fair Use covers, among other things, the right to make a
backup copy of a work for archival purposes.
