combined cellphone and handheld computer at a conference here 
recently, and the crowd cooed over the shrunken size of the device. 
But the gadget had shed more than its girth: It was also missing a 
push-button keypad. The convergence of cellphones and handheld 
computers is prompting one of the biggest changes in telephone design 
since rotary phones gave way to touch-tone devices decades ago
