Those of us with grey hair remember when television was going to
revolutionise the world and education but also -

Microforms
Tape recorders
Multimedia
Cusinare rods
CDROMs
etc etc

I remember the big step up when I moved from chalk on my own
personal little blackboard, then to pencil and exercise book and
finally ink and inkwells. The nibs could be made into excellent darts
when you added a stabilizing fin.

No doubt the invention of the fountain pen had people clamouring for
a fountain pen for every child (or perhaps class) but that was before
my time. We weren't allowed fountain pens till high school. I suspect
it was the leakage factor and mothers screaming about stained shirts.
There was similar reliability problems between fountain pens then and
a popular operating system now.

All my kids seen to know more than I did and seem a lot smarter. Who
knows, perhaps all these hyped things actually work. I'll have
another round of testing soon when the grandchildren enter school. I
pity help Aranda Primary School when they get Ari Barry, Ami Barry,
Abi Barry, Alana Barry and Brendan Barry who were born within 4 1/2
years of each other.
