We've noticed that the latest PC's running 1GHz CPUs are in the
'supercomputer ' class. An early player in the original supercomputer
stakes is now employing Linux in large-scale clustered systems to

"Supercomputer maker Cray today announced plans to offer an Alpha cluster combining
problemsolving speed with powerful technical data center features, price performance
and the Linux operating system.
Cray said the Alpha Linux SuperCluster systems-large-scale cluster would be formally
launched in coming months, and was scheduled to begin shipping in mid-2001.
It said Cray had received an early order agreement for a 32-processor Cray SV1 from
BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals and expected to "announce multiple orders by the time of the
product launch". "
