define 'successful'

     endurance?          yes.
     survivability?      yes.
     spread?             yes.
     mutations?          yes.
     lethality?          no.  <-- does this make it more successful?
     ...

this questions opens up a nest of ethical questions. Ebola is a very 
successful virus when you consider it's lethality, but meanwhile e.coli 
is also very successful, given that just about everyone has it.
