HILL STYMIED BY ONLINE GAMBLING
Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) plan to
reintroduce their online gambling legislation, albeit in a form
that will give it a better chance of passing. There are some
1,400 online gambling sites on the Web, up from roughly 700 just
last year, according to a new report released by Bear Stearns.
The report also claims that congressional support for legislation
to outlaw online gambling is dwindling. "I get the impression
most legislators realize how difficult it would be to ban online
gambling from every computer in the United States," said Bear
Stearns analyst Marc Falcone. Goodlatte dismisses this assessment,
noting that he is working with the Bush administration and several
supporters in Congress, including Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa), who
reintroduced a bill of his own that would outlaw the use of credit
cards in online gambling. Reps. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Tim
Roener (D-Ind.) intend to put the spotlight this week on
legislation that would outlaw wagering on college sports, including
betting over the Internet.
