MICROSOFT SETTLEMENT ANGERS RIVALS
Microsoft competitors yesterday accused the U.S. Justice Department of
"selling out" to the software giant, arguing that the terms of the recently
announced settlement did little to restrain Microsoft from repeating the
anticompetitive behavior of which it was found guilty. "It's such a bad
deal because it's not justified on the law," said Edward Black, president
of the Computer and Communications Industry Association, a group that
includes Oracle, AOL and Sun Microsystems. "They won the case in the
appeals court, in the district court, and the Supreme Court and yet they
seem to be ready to accept a deal that is weaker than ever before." "The
deal is so ineffectual as to be laughable," added Mike Pettit, president of
ProComp, another association of Microsoft competitors. Meanwhile, lawyers
for the 18 states that joined in the antitrust lawsuit are looking over the
details and sources familiar with the states' thinking doubt the attorneys
general will go along with the settlement. (Financial Times 2 Nov 2001)
