[LINK] Forged email
Wed, 7 Nov 2001 13:08:15 +1000 (EST)
I have a very interesting occurrence happening.
Several spam emails have been sent out with forged email addresses that
*appear* to come from my domain. There are 3 separate addresses being
used for 3 different messages.
I have received one complaint about one of the emails (unfortunately
they did not save the complete message headers...), but the real
problems is that there are a HUGE number of bad email addresses in the
list being used - and I am now getting all the return attempts to these
non existent emails (several thousand a day).
Whilst not amounting to a denial of service attack, I am of course being
billed by Telstra for all of this traffic. I spoke with Telstra and
there's nothing they can do (which is unsurprising). They also tell me
that there's nothing they can do about me being charged for the traffic
that is being generated...
I have captured the original messages and I have contact telephone
numbers (in the USA) for people who want to follow up the spam. So, the
culprits are (possibly) traceable.
So - my questions to Link are:-
1) Does this occurrence amount to something that I should report to the
2) If this is not a matter for the federal police, what else can one do
about this sort of abuse?
