Richard Alston appears to have fended off a challenge for his
Communications portfolio from Arts minister Peter McGauran. If the
steel-haired Victorian senator retains the sought-after post in John
Howard's ministerial reshuffle tomorrow or Friday he should prepare himself
for more than one backflip in his third term. Clearly, Howard has not been
overwhelmed by Alston's performance, which has left a number of issues in
limbo or in need of fresh policy approaches.
