SUN, 32 COMPANIES JOIN IDENTIFICATION PLAN
Sun Microsystems plans to give Microsoft's Passport system a run
for its money by forming the Liberty Alliance Project, a consortium
initially consisting of Sun and 32 other companies. Members of the
alliance include non-technology firms, such as General Motors and
Bank of America; technology companies that do not usually compete
with Microsoft, such as eBay, Cisco Systems, and Nokia; and more
firmly entrenched Microsoft competitors, such as Intuit, Sony, and
RealNetworks. The goal of the Liberty Alliance Project, like that
of Passport, is to give high-tech users the ability to access
numerous Internet resources with a single log-on.
