This old fossil agrees with you. I tried instant messaging but I 
didn't know any body to message! So I gave up on it.

I tried IRC years ago but it compared poorly with email lists and newsgroups.

Optus sent an SMS to tell me I had SMS but the only messages I get 
are from them to remind me to pay the bill :-)  My son and his wife 
find the service useful if one of them is at the shops and the other 
wants to remind them to buy something but I don't feel any 
inclination to use it. Email is so much more flexible and most people 
I know have email and I don't know who has mobile phones.
