ZERO-KNOWLEDGE ENDS ANONYMOUS SERVICE
Zero-Knowledge Systems, which offers customers a service that allows them
to send e-mail and surf the Web anonymously, is shutting down its Freedom
Network Oct. 22, saying subscriber numbers were insufficient to sustain the
service. "Obviously, we are sad to discontinue the service," says
Zero-Knowledge co-founder Austin Hill. "We spent a lot of time developing
this technology." The system operated by routing Web pages and messages in
encrypted form through a series of servers that deleted increasing amounts
of data that could be used to track the user's origin. The company now
plans to focus on more lucrative corporate services, including firewall
software. (Wall Street Journal 5 Oct 2001)
