INTERNET IS GLOBAL SOURCE FOR WAR NEWS
People in the U.S. and other countries are turning to the Internet for
alternative perspectives on the current conflict in Afghanistan,
capitalizing on the Internet's ability to deliver news from all over the
world. Media and foreign affairs experts say more U.S. Internet users are
veering off the mainstream media paths to supplement their understanding of
current events, turning to local newspaper sources such as Dawn in Pakistan
and Middle Eastern Web portals such as Islam Online for additional input.
At the same time, users outside the U.S. are consuming more U.S.-based
online media. Thirty-six percent of CNN.com's traffic during the 11 hours
following the Sept. 11 attacks came from non-U.S. users, vs. 22% for the
same day a week earlier. And more than half the traffic at the FBI site
that day came from abroad, according to ComScore Networks. Meanwhile, in
Britain, newspapers are serving up more details about military operations
than are available through U.S. media outlets. And media observers are
watching to gauge the impact of the Internet's global accessibility. On the
one hand, the Internet could narrow the gap between opposing sides, but
Nancy Snow, a propaganda expert and associate director of UCLA's Center for
Communications and Community, warns: "It also has the power to inflame, as
we saw with how this notion of an American 'crusade' got transmitted around
the world instantaneously on the Internet." (SiliconValley.com 10 Oct 2001)
