There are some trade-offs here.  Is a little extra effort by the voter
worth it to make the backend more efficient?  Does this style of
electronic voting make the backend processing much more efficient? (Not
that I'm casting a vote here either way. :)

The data entry portions of the manual voting method dwarf the processing
required to actually generate a result.  I'd happily accept a couple
of extra steps per voter to reduce the data entry load.
