HOUSE EXTENDS NET TAX BAN
The House has approved a two-year extension to the moratorium
on Internet taxes, and the Bush administration has indicated it
will support the short-term extension, even though it prefers a
longer extension. Several policymakers, including Rep. Christopher
Cox (R-Calif.), Rep. Ernest Istook (R-Okla.), and Mark Weinberger,
the assistant Treasury secretary for tax policy, voiced their
approval of the extension. Others, such as Sen. Byron Dorgan
(D-N.D.) and Rep. William Delahunt (D-Mass.) prefer a shorter
extension that would allow state and local governments the chance
to begin collecting online sales taxes.
