Canberra considers 48-hour lawyer
ban
By DARRIN FARRANT
LAW REPORTER
Tuesday 23 October 2001
Interrogating terrorism suspects for up to 48 hours
without access to a
lawyer was justifiable, federal Attorney-General Daryl
Williams said
yesterday.
[snip]
Mr Williams rejected suggestions that the proposed anti-terrorist
measures were an over-reaction given that no attack had
occurred in
Australia.
"What we suggest is that this is an appropriate
reaction to be used
very sparingly in quite extraordinary circumstances
where there is a
threat to the lives of people and possibly property
through acts of
terrorism," he said.
More details on the planned ASIO interrogation laws are
unlikely until
after the election. But Labor has already suggested
that it supports the
government's measures.
