I suspect this is foisted on us by web designers who know no HTML, and use
lame braindead web page generation software.

The days of craft (yes, Virginia, web site design is a craft) being
replaced by mass produced vulgarity are indeed upon us. Same goes
for dynamic webs requiring scripting.
