The reason this was done was because it was easy to split .id.au into
manageable domain spaces that a single individual could provide time and
infrastructure to maintain with ease. Once a .id.au zone got too big for a
that person to handle or to provide resources for without major cost, the
zone was to be closed to further registrations.
But I agree, it would be much nicer to have .id.au registrations rather
than .*.id.au registrations.

To me that's starting to defeat the purpose of the domain name system.
DNS's whole idea is that human's prefer names while your network needs
number.
Nice idea though - but plenty of other ways to skin a cat.
