My first response was along Roger's lines. So these people were
celebrating, but *what* were they celebrating? Pictures of towers
burning and then collapsing in the distance probably, which wouldn't
have looked entirely different to houses being demolished by the
Israeli army... (Never having been to New York, I don't know that I
will ever really grasp just how big those towers were, and certainly
the video clips that were played over and over again didn't make
it obvious that thousands of people were dying.) I also heard
BBC reporters saying that while there were isolated incidents of
cheering, most of the West Bank was deathly quiet. When one can
deceive through very selective reporting, who needs to reuse footage
from ten years ago?
And then I remembered watching crowds of Australians standing around
cheering footage of bombs raining on Baghdad in 1991... They didn't
know what was really happening. The only footage available for the
networks was carefully released stuff from the US military, after all,
and I doubt most Australians would have known where Baghdad was the
month before.
Danny.
