Fortunately, there is now GPG, which is PGP compatible and is also 
under the GPL, so the source can be verified for back doors. GPG 
implementations are now quite mature; there is a GPG plugin for 
Mail.app, the default Mail client on MacOS X, which makes sending & 
receiving encrypted mail quite transparent.
