I often question the use of the term "software engineers", for similar
reasons.
What is wrong with the more descriptive terms "computer programmer",
"systems analyst" and "programmer/analyst"?
The day that "creating software systems on computers" becomes a profession,
with proper vetting of members of that profession and requisite penalties
for incompentence, breach of duty or negligence will be the day that
computer "professionals" might call themselves "engineers" or perhaps
"professionals".
As an analyst myself, I don't even invite the term. I have never thought
of myself as an engineer, nor am I ever likely to do so.
