Microsoft's lawyers, addressing a conference on digital rights management,
say DRM will fail. Instead, it would be better for copyright owners to
compete on cost and convenience.

Watermarking is not much use (this from The Reg, not from me); ditto digital
fingerprinting; and technical DRM solutions are more likely to inhibit
legitimate sales than illegal copying. Unprotected content wins because it
has greater utility - IOW, people buying stuff are more likely to buy
unprotected stuff than protected.
