Interestingly enough, I could open this document faultlessly, as well 
as another one Rick provided, using MS Word 2001 for Mac OS, running 
under Mac OS 9.2.

 From what I understand, the Mac OS products were developed by a 
completely different team at Microsoft, and from a substantially 
different code base. And I recall that, at least for a while, the 
team was even based near Apple at Cupertino, California, not in 
Redmond, Washington.

Now if only I could read my old contacts database...
