another alternative is to just add an access password to the web
archives.  make it something like login "guest" with password "guest"
and set it up so that these login details are displayed in the login
dialog.

this will allow human access while preventing automated spambot access.
(it will also prevent access by search-engine bots such as google)


sometimes people want to read list archives before they decide whether
they want to subscribe or not....and sometimes they're doing some
research, following a link found on another web page or a search engine.
