I bcc'd my post to Michael Froomkin. His response to me was brisk
and to the point as always - but based on his memory only (so if he's
got something wrong, don't get upset at him!!). Because it contains
valuable leads, here it is:

>IIRC, the volume of traffic at root servers is not that low. 'F'
>certainly claimed a LOT of traffic even at normal times, as does verisign.
>Alas, I can't find where I got that, F has changed how it reports, but I
>recall being surprised at how much it was. There's also this:
>http://www.caida.org/~kkeys/dns/2002-08-28/ which is a little different.
>and http://www.caida.org/outreach/papers/2001/DNSPerfMeas/dpm.pdf
>which is informative
>
>Write Vixie, he'll tell you the straight scoop?
>
>As for fragility, it's self inflicted. Karl Auerbach has a proposal for
>'emergency DNS in a box' -- actually on a CD. Spread a lot of those
>around and we'd be safe.
