The more constructive parts of my messages to my ISP (:-)} have been
as follows.  Observations gratefully received!

>550 5.1.2 Roger.Clarke@xamax.com.au... Host unknown (Name server:
>mail2.apex.net.au.: host not found)
>Reporting-MTA: dns; web.anu.edu.au

The fact that the ANU's DNS server is reporting this means that
{ns1,ns2}.apex.net.au are both unreachable at the same time.
Surely it's a major problem if your name-server(s) can't be found?!

Do you have your two name-servers on separate networks, as required
under DNS rules? [Answer received: 'yes'!].

[I was fudging the bit about 'DNS rules require it', because I know
it would take me too damned long to search through the RFC database;
but I have a vague memory of reading that sometime]

Surely if your name-servers are both on the same segment there will
be frequent such glitches. I thought the norm was for small ISPs to
team up with distant ISPs, say Canberra with Sydney or Perth, and
house one another's secondaries ...
