yes, it's just like star wars.  there's a big desert and lots of sand, there's
lots of explosions and other forms of technofetishism, and there's even a
serviously evil guy who usurps control of the democratic federation and turns
it into a militaristic empire who threatens planetary destruction if anyone
dares oppose him.

the only thing missing is a hero...there certainly isn't one disguised as a
peasant boy from a small town in the desert.  "Use the force, Saddam" just
doesn't ring true somehow.


i've occasionally wondered if george lucas intended the star wars series as
some sort of allegorical comment on the united states.  american movies and
novels seem ironically obsessed by the idea of rebels fighting against evil
empires.
