From one of the Adelaide newspapers, but don't know which one.

THE LONG.....
One of life's great mysteries has finally been solved. After a survey
of 400 Adelaide residents by McGregor Marketing, the proverbial piece
of string measures in at 6.47m long. The question was proposed by
JOHN MITCHELL, from the PR company with the same name, after winning
a prize with the leading marketing research company.

....AND THE SHORT OF IT
Incredibly 58% of those surveyed had no idea how long was a piece of
string, while 14% gave a specific length. Most estimates ranged
between 10cm and 100m, with the average being 6.47m. Makes you think
doesn't it.
