Another thought is that devices like the DLink access point or the NetComm
DSL modem and so on are probably designed with the physical/environmental
requirements in mind - ie, that their packaging, temperature range and so on
are probably specified assuming that they'll always be turned on, that
they'll suffer unconditioned air, that they don't have fans and so on. A
desktop PC, while still reasonably robust, has a lot more stuff to keep cool
than a DSL modem/firewall...
