TELSTRA has showered key decision-makers in the federal Government with
gifts ranging from plasma televisions to weekends away at an exclusive
winery.

As John Howard yesterday defended his acceptance of a $10,000 television
from Telstra, a search of pecuniary interest records found the company had
a long-standing practice of rewarding Coalition MPs involved in forming
telecommunications policy. In February last year, Liberal senator Ian
Campbell, parliamentary secretary to the Treasurer, made his annual
pilgrimage to the Leeuwin Estate winery in Western Australia, where he
enjoyed fine wine, a John Farnham concert and accommodation at Telstra's
expense.

Telstra also took Senator Campbell to see Roberta Flack at the winery in
2001, when he was the parliamentary secretary to Communications Minister
Richard Alston.

Senator Alston and Mr Howard both accepted the $10,000 plasma televisions
for a period of three months almost six months ago.
