I have received a couple (the latest was from HMV) and close inspection of
the headers has shown all to be legitimate attempts to confirm my consent to
receive email from that organisation. 

I've used it as an opportunity to opt-out of a few lists that I no longer
pay attention to but wasn't sufficiently annoyed to do anything other than
hit delete once a month or so.
