Ruddock flags email tapping laws

The Federal Government wants the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and
intelligence agencies to be given the power to intercept emails and
text messages sent by suspected criminals.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock says authorities already have the
power to access telephone conversations but are not able to intercept
emails or mobile telephone text messages.

Mr Ruddock says under the proposed laws, the Attorney-General or a
judge would need to issue a warrant before the messages could be
accessed.

"What we're seeking to do is to put beyond doubt that when a phone tap
is initiated you can read the messages, whether they're email or
whether they're a text message and that evidence that you obtain in
that way can be lawfully obtained and properly introduced as evidence
in a trial," he said.
