In other words, Microsoft is introducing yet another way in which a 
network-centric application (Messenger) can cause things to happen on 
a remote user's computer (the recipient's) outside its own realm 
(i.e. not in its own windows, but on screen real estate currently 
being used by other applications or the operating system itself).

And Microsoft has the gall to say that security is now a priority.

Of course if they've designed it properly, this sort of thing can be 
done securely. But I doubt that it's been thought through that much. 
The demo to marketing and the "Oh that's cool!" response will have 
the the basis for the go-ahead.

I am such a kill-joy...
