Engineers seeking recognition in the Free Trade Agreement
Engineers Australia is satisfied with the improved access to the United
States market for Australian service suppliers through the Australia-United
States Free Trade Agreement, but is awaiting the critical detail about
mutual recognition of professional qualifications.
Engineers Australia's spokesperson Dr Peter Greenwood said the Australian
regulatory system for engineers currently places little or no barriers in
front of US engineers wanting to work in Australia. However, the reverse is
not true for Australian engineers wanting to work in the US.
"It is very encouraging to hear reports that the FTA includes a framework
to promote recognition of professional services," he said.
"We are keen to see how the FTA is going to deliver recognition of the
professional skills of Australian engineers to open up work opportunities
in the United States. Engineers Australia hopes that regulatory barriers
within the United States do not delay, or scuttle the intentions of, the
FTA."
