No. Because sales >aren't< dropping. That's why this issue sends me into
such a sputtering fury: "sales are falling" is repeated so often that it's
believed.

Here are the ARIA numbers:
CD Singles: 14,539,155 units; -17.36%
CD albums: 218,945,615 units; +2.94%
DVD albums: 601,700 units; +173.37%
VHS Music Video: 52,130 units; - 59.81%
DVD Music Video: 1,469,433 units; +122.46%

The total market, which includes vinyl and cassettes:
25,788,961 units; +5.28%.

Album market by value (DVD + CD) rose by around 3%.

All of the falling segments are in dead-or-dying technology; but note that
CD albums do not fall into this heading, they are still growing.

At 01:13 PM 13/02/04 +1100, you wrote:

Now that is an interesting piece of information. Rather than jump
around
about the impact of piracy, I wonder if any of the music producers are
considering market research to figure out why their sales are dropping
for
reasons that Marty mentions. It sure would provide a real help to their

dropping sales rather than chasing ghosts.
