Good grief! (Actually, when I read you email, my expostulation was
something I do not want committed to a permanent record).
Whatever happened to the presumption of innocence?
Hicks may be blacker than Satan - but until he has his day in a properly
constituted court with rules of evidence that allow him to challenge
fully his accusers, we must, for our own sakes, treat him as innocent.
Unless we do this, we are throwing away hard won principles that protect
us from the high handed actions of our governments.
What has happened to Hicks is a classic example of how we are losing the
soi disant "war against terror". Unless we prosecute this war, including
dealing with 'enemy combatants' with truth, justice and mercy, we are
making ourselves indistinguishable from the terrorists. We are treating
our own illegally: small wonder, then, that we have treated
representatives of the 'other' so poorly in Abu Graibh prison and small
wonder that Al Qaeda's active membership is growing. By failing to
provide a clear difference between ourselves and the terrorists, we are
their best recruiters.
We are allowing our good name, our society and our freedoms to be stolen
from us by people interested only in protecting their power and
privilege, not that of society at large. That they have convinced so
many people of the unique rightness of 'their' way is only further
proof, should such be required given our pitiful and lengthy history of
such behavious, of our collective gullibility.
