Of late, Mr Milholland's been finding it hard to keep up the flow of 
toons to the disappointment of his fans. So - perhaps as a joke, perhaps 
not - he started a donations scheme. He said that if his fans would 
donate the equivalent of his salary, US$22,000, he'd quit his job and 
draw full time.

Today he made it.

Is this the first time that an artist has managed to replace his or her 
salary through public subscription on the Web?

If so, it's impressive and probably historic.
