My predecessor at a RAAF Publications position (mid 1980s) wrote a report on the
subject of archival storage with the help of the govt archives people (and the
obligatory fact-finding trip) and concluded that microfiche (and other forms of
microfilm) was indeed the best bet for long-term storage. Optical/digital storage
had arrived by then, but it was already considered a transient medium that would
need to be bridged to subsequent digital media to be of archival value.
Being the Cold War era, it was also noted that microfiche readers were more likely
to be usable after an EMP incident. :-)
