Linkers,
For those with an interest in more useful access to legislation:
Launch of AustLII's "Point in Time" legislation System
======================================================
The Australasian Legal Information Institute has released its
Point-in-Time legislation system, details of which are available at
http://portsea.austlii.edu.au/pit/ together with a brief descriptive
paper and examples. The system was launched in Sydney and Melbourne
last week.
The PiT Legislation System allows an AustLII user to see an Act or
section as it was at any day in the past, for those years covered by
the system (back to 2000 at present). Users can inspect all versions
of a section, and can visually compare sections at different dates
side-by-side. Access is free.
AustLII's PiT already covers all NSW Acts (with a few exceptions), a
significant part of the legislation of Queensland, and some South
Australia Acts. These databases are considered to be experimental,
but available for public testing. This project aims to apply a
generic approach to developing point-in-time legislation which will
now be applied progressively to legislation from other Australian
jurisdictions, and possibly to some international legislation.
The easiest way to use the PiT system is to go to any section in
AustLII's normal NSW legislation
<http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/consol_act/>, and select the
[History] link to go to the equivalent section in the PiT system.
Acknowledgments: This research was supported by an Australian
Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant, with support from industry
partners the New South Wales Parliamentary Counsel's Office,
Australian Business Limited and the Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade. AustLII wishes to thank our Project Officer, Armin Wittfoth,
and Executive Director Philip Chung, for their hard work in
developing the PiT system.
We hope you find it interesting and valuable to use.
